SoulArt Productions Proudly Announces The Extension of The Common Air -- "Everyone Travels with Baggage ..."
Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) March 20, 2008 -- SoulArt and C.A.F.E. present The Common Air at Theatre Asylum in Hollywood, California. Show re-opens for its 2nd extension, Friday, March 28th and plays Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., through April 26th. All shows begin at 8 p.m. at the Theatre Asylum, 6320 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90038 (one block west of Vine). Info and reviews available at www.thecommonair.com.
The Common Air is written by Alex Lyras and Robert McCaskill. An intricate, original score and sound design have been composed by Ken Rich. Alex Lyras is the performer.
Lyras transforms into six distinct characters in The Common Air. The inventive structure involves multiple conversations that link one character to another, eventually coming full circle in a startling climax.
The play juggles several themes: the dangers of today's "you-create-your-own-reality" self-help culture, technology's depreciating effects on face to face humanity, the unconscious temptation to suicide bomb, and the Iraq war's myriad effects on American culture. The airport delay -- the common bond linking the characters -- is rumored to be a result of a terrorist conspiracy.
"Lyras, a compact, steel spring of a performer who coils himself around his characters with the tensile energy and unflagging skill in his well-crafted, must-see show." Los Angeles Times Critics Choice
"Richer than Danny Hoch's or Eric Bogosian's solo showcases..." LA WEEKLY GO!
"A complex network of ideas... developed with subtly and depth... Punctuated with precision and sensitivity" Backstage West pick
Playwrights Lyras and McCaskill received rave reviews from theater critics at The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The LA Weekly, Backstage West and East, among others, for their last two collaborations: Desperelics (2000) and Unequalibrium (2002). Both shows ran Off-Broadway in New York and were then produced in Los Angeles. Unequalibrium was published in Best Plays 2002 and Best Men's Monologues For the Twenty First Century. And was nominated for a Dramalogue Award. The New York Times states, "Mr. Lyras is a writer and performer of promise." (Past reviews available at http://www.unequalibrium.com/reviews.html)
Composer Ken Rich has recorded with Lou Reed, Shabba Ranks, Laurie Anderson, Deborah Harry, and David Byrne. He has written music for HBO, VH1, the NBA and the film Whipped. This is his second collaboration with Lyras and McCaskill.
