Knit One, Purl One - Artwork Knitted From Glass
(PRWEB) March 26, 2008 -- Nadja Recknagel, 34, literally uses hot strings of glass and knits them together as a knitter would do with wool until a hollow shape forms.
These long hollow shapes then form part of her sculptures and, despite looking incredibly fragile and delicate, are actually very tough.
Nadja, who has had previous works bought and displayed by the Frankfurt Art Museum and the Museum for Art and Craft in Hamburg, said: "Every shake, every hesitation, every movement of my hands is frozen in these glass objects. It keeps the language of your hands frozen forever, using cold, hard inanimate materials."
Art agent Kerstin Müller, who runs The Lots of Art Project in Dartford, Kent, added: "Nadja wants to draw you in, she wants to inspire your imagination and she wants you to touch.
"Many people naturally hesitate when touching something made of glass but Nadja will often give a small object to someone to hold to help them lose their fear of breaking it."
Nadja's work will be showing at the Chelsea Art Fair, London, along with three other prominent German artists in April 08. Another of the artists is Marion Dörre who paints in a variety of media, including watercolours, acrylic and also experiments with collage and shell.
As well as exhibiting in Germany, she has also shown work in the USA and China. Kerstin said: "Her work is very atmospheric and she uses light beautifully. You loose yourself looking at the paintings, they inspire your imagination over and over again.
She will also be showing work by Korean-born Myeong-Ja Zimmerer who has lived in Germany since 1975. Myeong-Ja creates images of her artistic interpretation of mystical themes but also incorporates formal and emotional elements from her native country.
Kerstin said: "She takes daily observations and experiences and incorporates them into her world of art. Her ink drawings on rice paper captivated me with there simplicity and still expressive movements of bamboo plants and lotus flowers."
The final artist is Christa Steinmetz who creates unusual, contemporary sculptures out of a range of materials. Kerstin added: "Christa works in ceramics, she sometimes combines metal with it. The results are highly creative and organic. For Christa the materials she works with are stimulating all her senses, they are soft and formable, but also dry and xxx . All End results are interesting and very decorative. Every piece has a carefully chosen title. You have to see for yourself to really understand?"
All four artists' work can be seen at the Chelsea Art Fair, Chelsea Old Town Hall, from April 24 to 27, 2008.
