Roaring Leo Productions 'Shifts the Canvas' on Film Production in The Big Easy
New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- Roaring Leo Productions (www.roaringleo.com) and Deeper Magic Communications are partnering up to seek executive producers for their upcoming production of 'Shifting the Canvas', a feature film written and directed by Chuck Griffith (Thank You, Good Night). Robert Zimmer (Half-Life) is producing the project.
'Shifting the Canvas' is a film set in Brooklyn, New York; however, some scenes take place in New Orleans that deal with real estate poaching after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. "There's no reason why we couldn't bring the majority of the production to New Orleans and double up the interiors to look like New York," says Griffith.
The story centers around an artist, Leo Scheer (John Paul Pitoc), who makes a fatal deal with a local real estate developer to paint six pieces in four months based on a painting in a café; however, the piece of work in the café was never Leo's creation in the first place. While Leo works to become the artist he aspires to be he falls in love and realizes that relationships and art have tragically more in common than a heart can endure
The filmmakers say that throughout the past couple of months, many talented industry professionals located in New Orleans have been contacting the production company for work. Zimmer and Griffith think that bringing the production (budgeted at around $1 million) would send a powerful message that New Orleans can be a supportive city for both television and film productions. Although the production is more streamlined than the big budget Hollywood projects, the team hopes that there will be enthusiasm for independent filmmakers to bring their open jobs to New Orleans.
"We're excited because we think there's new territory for this industry in New Orleans and we think our production is artistic and commercial enough to get it set up there," added Zimmer, who is also a former writer and producer for Spelling Television.
Roaring Leo is currently looking into grant opportunities while trying to seek avenues of financing within the region. "It's a slight challenge," said Zimmer. "It is gay-themed, but the topics of gentrification and art are universal; so, we're hopeful for a positive response from New Orleans."
'Shifting the Canvas' is slated for production October 2007 and will star John Paul Pitoc (Trick, Six Feet Under), Scott Thompson (Kids in the Hall), and Patrick David (Walking through Egypt). George Lekovic (Polycarp) will serve as the film's Director of Photography. The producers are in talks with distributors and hopes to submit to various first tier film festivals in December 2007.
